How We Treat Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

At Stefanie R Therapy, we approach the treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) with a comprehensive and personalized approach.

Our therapy focuses on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), specifically Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which is one of the most effective ways to treat OCD. By using ERP, we help individuals gradually confront their fears and obsessions while learning healthy ways to manage their compulsions. Additionally, we incorporate mindfulness techniques to help increase awareness of thoughts and feelings without judgment, which can be particularly beneficial for managing OCD symptoms.

Our goal is to provide a supportive and understanding environment where individuals with OCD can learn effective coping strategies and achieve lasting relief to live the high-quality of life they deserve.

Common Symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by the presence of obsessions, which are intrusive and unwanted thoughts, images, or urges, and compulsions, which are repetitive behaviors or mental acts that a person feels driven to perform to calm the obsessive thoughts, and meet the obsessive, rigid rules.

Common signs of OCD include frequent and intense worries about contamination, harm, or safety; a need for symmetry or orderliness; excessive doubt or need for reassurance; and repetitive behaviors such as checking, counting, or arranging items. If you suffer with OCD, you may also experience significant distress or impairment in functioning due to these symptoms.

It's important to note that OCD can vary widely in severity and presentation from person to person, and we approach treatment differently for each of our clients. We believe each person’s unique symptoms require a specialized approach that is unique to you.

What Causes Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?

The exact cause of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is not fully understood, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic, neurological, behavioral, cognitive, and environmental factors. Research suggests that OCD may be related to abnormalities in certain neurotransmitters, particularly serotonin, which plays a role in regulating mood, behavior, and cognition.

There is also evidence to suggest that OCD may run in families, indicating a genetic component to your diagnosis. Additionally, certain life events, such as trauma or stress, may trigger or exacerbate your OCD symptoms. Psychological factors, such as maladaptive beliefs or coping mechanisms, may also contribute to the development of OCD. Overall, OCD is complex and each person can have or develop OCD for a variety of reasons. Due to this, we don’t believe there is a one size fits all approach to treating OCD.

At Stefanie R Therapy, we work alongside you to understand underlying causes and triggers of your OCD and work towards helping you understand and manage your symptoms.
